Chinese New Year (also called Lunar New Year and Spring Festival) is a pretty big deal here in Manchester. In fact, it’s one of the largest celebrations of the festival in the UK.
From 14th February, the city centre as you know it will morph into a kaleidoscope of culture, community and cuisine. Turn any corner and you’ll find something happening – whether it’s a thrilling performance, street food stall, cheering crowd, or all three.
Here’s everything happening in Manchester for Chinese New Year 2026.
Dragon Parade | Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th February
Probably the most iconic event in the Manchester Chinese New Year lineup, the Dragon Parade is not one to miss.
Watch the streets explode into a sea of colour, starting at the junction of Oxford Road and George Street at 12pm and finishing in Chinatown at around 1:45pm. Expect an abundance of live performances and street food, as well as a vibrant parade that draws in hundreds of spectators.
Don’t worry, no tickets are needed. Just round up your pals, family or come solo, and enjoy an excitement-packed day.
The Lunar New Year Fair | Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th February
A two-day market is hitting the pavements of Market Street, Exchange Square and New Cathedral Street.
With over 130 stalls to browse and buy from, you’re sure to find even the niche-est of traders. Taiwanese ramen… WWW Mart snacks… handmade jewellery… you name it, you’ll find it. There’s even going to be film screenings and performances to heighten your shopping experience.
Lunar New Year at Manchester Museum | Wednesday 18th February
Looking for a more intimate celebration with fewer crowds? This is the event for you.
Manchester Museum’s Lunar New Year is one of the most anticipated in the city. Enjoy an evening filled with craft workshops, Lion Dance performances, storytelling, and traditional snacks. It’s an incredible opportunity to experience Chinese tradition up-close.
Plus, tickets are free and the event schedule is brimming with fun activities.
Rice Paper Lantern Painting at House of Social | Sunday 15th February
Paintbrushes at the ready. Things are about to get a lot more colourful around here…
Local Chinese painting expert, Ula Fung, is joining us at House of Social to teach traditional Chinese brush painting techniques. Sip a complimentary drink, assemble your lantern, and get creative with your colours.
Haven’t tried Chinese brush painting before? Or maybe you’re well-practiced? Don’t worry, all levels are welcome.
Tickets include full use of materials including bamboo brushes, sumi ink and mineral paints.
Chinese Brush Painting Workshop at House of Social | Sunday 22nd February
Always wanted to have a go at traditional Chinese Brush Painting? Now’s your chance.
Join us in the Food Hall for our Chinese Brush Painting Workshop to hand-paint your very own rice paper scroll, perfect to decorate your room with. Ula Fung will be joining us again for this two and a half hour session to help you perfect your paint strokes.
