An outdoor market overflowing with trinkets and treats. Independent shops selling unique, handcrafted pieces. Cosy cafés serving irresistible pastries and freshly made matcha. Sounds like student paradise, right?
If student heaven is a place on earth, it looks a lot like Altrincham.
Altrincham (pronounced ‘All-tring-ham’) is one of the UK’s first-ever market towns. One of the most coveted corners of South Manchester, this charming little town tugs at the heartstrings of every visitor. It’s the poster boy for Manchester gentrification but in the best way, making it a solid student favourite.
If you’re yet to visit this beautiful suburb, it’s time to amend your calendar.
Whether you’re visiting Altrincham to shop, eat, drink, explore, or all four, we’re confident you won’t leave disappointed.
How to get there from House of Social
Tram – walk to Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop and take the Altrincham line (also known as the Green Line). The journey should take around 25 minutes.
Taxi – a taxi from House of Social to the town centre of Altrincham should take around 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Best cafes

Best pubs and bars
Kennedy’s Irish Bar – Fancy a tipple or two in a traditional Irish bar? Kennedy’s is king. Here, you’ll find the best pint of Guinness in Altrincham, lively Irish tunes, and a buzzy atmosphere that everyone will enjoy. It’s always good craic at Kennedy’s.
HARCOURT – This Hong Kong-inspired gastropub is a real frontrunner in Altrincham’s bar-and-small-plates scene. Delight in authentic dishes, draught beers or fresh cocktails. The lychee cocktail is a must-have.
Cheshire Tap – Want to experience proper British pub culture? Cheshire Tap is your spot. With a bar stacked with drink options, a beer garden and diverse food menu, this place has everything you need to have a good time.

Best restaurants
Altrincham Market – It’s a rule (albeit unwritten) that no Altrincham visit is complete without a stop at the market. This multi-award-winning market is foodie utopia. Order from a range of kitchens, including Great Northern Pie, Rubens, Pico’s, and more.
Rigatoni’s – Casual. Welcoming. Delectable. One of Altrincham’s highest-rated restaurants, this neighbourhood pasta kitchen knows exactly what they’re doing with our favourite carb. Eat here once, and you’ll definitely be visiting again.
